Ack trojans...
Posted On: 12/09/2007 01:21:27

I am having problems with Fraps (A capturing software for games) not recording properly.  I'm trying to rule out software it may be conflicting with... I completely disabled my anti-virus before I went into a game.  I did nothing else but play the game with it disabled.  It seemed to work at first... but then it started acting up again.

I went to my task manager to end task EVERYTHING that was not important when I noticed a file that should not be on my computer... svehost.exe  (notice how close it resembles svchost.exe).

I have no idea how long it has been there, how it got there and why my anti-virus didn't catch it.  Either the server had the trojan and it got transfered to my computer while downloading a map in-game or my anti-virus failed to detect it.  I think it failed to detect it because I did a full scan and it never found the file but I manually removed it from starting up ever again.   I can't seem to locate the file however.

While scanning, my anti-virus did pick something up which I had no clue of... another trojan.  Where did these come from?????????? I have no idea but now I have to change my password of every single application and website I use...

I think I'm just going to format...

One thing im thankful for, I rather have trojans than viruses.  Trojans are easy to remove and rarely do damage... viruses on the other hand infect everything and destroy everything.

one thing i have noticed is when i worry about having anti-virus software, spyware programs and the like, is when i end up getting viruses/spyware. now i just have my comp with no protection whatsoever, no worries. i dont care about it and i have no problems now (that i know of). hey that's what system restore, backing up your registry, and reformatting is for :P. plus it helps that i have an external hdd where all my important info is, if i do end up having to reformat my main hdd's.

I have Ad-aware and occasionally use an online tool from Trend Micro.  The latter is really good.  I also search for files I know are bad. :)

If you get a spyware remover, get Spyware Doctor from PC Tools (available at all the usual sites ; majorgeeks, tucows etc) It picks up way more nasties than ad-aware or spybot search & destroy.

Heh, my first thought from the title was condoms.  Now I'm paranoid and will have to go check my computer.
