Psychologist
Posted On: 02/18/2008 05:30:19

My doctor has finally realised that there is a problem with me and has arranged for me to see a psychologist (or psychiatrist, he mentioned both during the appointment but I was too nervous to ask which it was).

Can anyone tell me what happened the first time you saw a psychologist so I know what kind of thing to expect?

I am really nervous about it, but somehow I think I will find it easier to explain my problems to them rather than a GP since they will have more knowledge about SA.

I find a psychologist is easier than a GP too, my GP made me feel like i was making my depression up! The jammy git!
I had a  Psychiatrist and after loads of questions and after a few sessions she concluded that i had SA! Then that's when i tried cognitive behavorial therapy which was hard for me...cos i'm naturally stubborn when it comes to therapy, i like things to work straight away, i have no patiences. I also learned that i have a low attention span anore! I find it hard to concentrate on one thing for ages! I dunno how i managed uni to be honest lol

Anyways please don't worry about it duckie, it will give you an opportunity to talk things through and sort things out in your head! Help you to accept things and give you techniques on how to cope with things! Now that you've past the GP test things should be moving in a postive direction!

take care

xx

I remember my doctor misdiagnoised me, which is a common among the SAers due to lack of awareness as doctors continue to see SA as not a life threatening or conflicting disorder. It really depends on the experience and education of the psychologist in treating SA  and usually you can tell off the bat, especially if you are constantly having to define SA to this psychologist. THe first time you see the psychologist it is mostly  you answering a bunch of questions about your background and where you are at now with the SA and how it effect your life. I greatly benefited from therapy as I was able to straighten issues out with  an outside perspective, someone that wasn't family, didn't have a personal connection or someone from my past. As you let those issues out and push through the SA it does get better. So that is excellant and I hope things goes well.

I have been to a psychiatrist, but not a psychologist.  They will basically ask you questions to try to diagnose what the problem is and the level of severity.

It is understandable to be nervous, but I think you can feel better about it than talking to a GP.  Psychiatrists and psychologists deal with mental issues every day.  You can be sure that regardless of what you tell them, they have surely heard it before from someone else.
