Last weekend, I went to Cape Cod with my social group. We had a great time. On Saturday, we went whale watching. Then we had a barbecue at the hotel. On Sunday, we went to the Cape Cod Maritime Festival. We had dinner at an Italian restaurant. On Monday, we went to Plymouth Plantation and the Mayflower II. I have great news. I had applied for Able Ride, which is bus service for people with disabilities, and I got accepted!! I received my Able Ride card in the mail today. I don't have to be dependent on my father to drive me to work anymore. I can take the Able Ride bus. This is one more accomplishment I have made over the past 20 years. I am happy and proud of myself. If you put your mind to something, you can do just about anything.
Sunday night, I went to my social group. The activity for Sunday night's meeting was Coffee and Board Game Night. I played UNO with my girlfriend Asha, David and his wife Carole, Susan, Irving, Joe and Allie. Other people in the group, including Jeff, Jackie and Caitlin, were playing Trivia Pursuit.
Tomorrow, I have to report for jury duty. I am bringing my doctor's letter saying that I am medically unfit to serve on a jury. Hopefully, I will be dismissed. This has come at a very bad time. At my job, we are very short of staff. One of my co-workers passed away two months ago due to lung cancer. Another co-worker has been out of work for one year; first she had knee surgery and then hip surgery. Another co-worker's mother passed away yesterday.
Saturday night, Asha and I had dinner with Rhonda at T.G.I. Friday's in Westbury. On Sunday, Asha and I went to the Friendship Connection. Sunday night was the first meeting of the group for the Fall semester. One of the activities we did at the group was a memory game. We went around the room, starting with Brian. Brian said his name. Then Ben had to say Brian's name and his own name. Then Michael had to say Brian's name, Ben's name and his own name, and so on. When it was my turn, I said, "Brian, Ben, Michael, Monica, Susan, Tom, Kenny, Jennifer, Tom, Irving, Barry, Susan, Asha, James." I have a good memory. After the memory game, we planned what activities we will be doing this year. Next Sunday, we are going bowling. Other activities include Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Dinner, day trip to New York City to see Cirque Du Soleil, and Holiday Party in December. Eliran told us that in May 2008, we would be going to Cape Cod for the weekend. He told us that in 2009 we would be going to Las Vegas and in 2010 we would be going to Disney World. I had previously gone to Cape Cod with the group in 1992, when Lee and Bob were the group leaders. I have never been to Las Vegas. I have been to Disney World twice, the first time with my parents in 1986; and the second time in 1998, with my brother Jon, his now ex-wife Bernadette and Michele. Jon and Bernadette had just gotten married, (I was the Best Man and Michele was the Maid of Honor) and they invited us to come with them on their honeymoon. The honeymoon included a cruise.
Saturday night, my girlfriend and I were supposed to go to my friend's birthday party. My friend had told me that the party would be at Grand Lux Cafe in Roosevelt Field. I said, okay we are going. He said he wanted a $25 gift card from Best Buy for his birthday. I said okay. Thursday night, I went to Best Buy and bought a gift card for $25.
Saturday morning, he IMed me on America Online and said, "Sorry about tonight." I said, "What?" He said, "Nobody told you? The party has been changed to Charlie Brown's in Commack." He waited until the last minute to tell me this. He said that some people wouldn't be able to get to Roosevelt Field. Well, my girlfriend and I cannot get to Commack. I don't drive and my girlfriend doesn't drive to Commack.
We didn't go to the party. Sunday morning, I e-mailed him and told him that if I had known the party was in Commack and not at Roosevelt Field, I would have said we couldn't make it. I told we were mad at him. I told him that he was supposed to tell me ahead of time that the party was changed to Commack. He wrote back that he was busy and he didn't have time to e-mail me.
We all need to ask ourselves, "Who are our real friends?" A real friend would not treat us this way. I am giving the $25 gift card to my niece Alyssa. The point I am trying to make is, my so-called friend made it easy for some people but not for my girfriend and me. The people who live in Farmingdale tell him to jump, and he would say, "How High?"
