Yeah, kind of same with me too. I first really got into it when I saw the anime. However I had played the Dreamcast game a couple years before so that was technically my first exposure, even though I didn't understand the background of the story then.
I've been collecting the mangas as they've been coming out in the US. It's interesting to compare the anime and orginal manga, what was changed or left out and all. The anime kind of a really pales now that I've read through the manga up and past it now.(but the gag reels are keepers) I think it would have wrapped up better had they had one more episode that at least explained how Guts survived and how he got his dragonslayer. Of course, they would need SkullKnight in there to explain that.
I know of a site where there are scans for book 12 and beyond. I've used it before for reading ahead(I'm still going to buy the books anyway when they come out). Let me know if you want the address. :)

And for your comment on my picture,I don't know if people go to the top of the glacier,but I don't think its safe to climb.Its melting and I think its very fragile.Pieces of it fell off when I was there.Sad but true..
