Music Appreciation
Posted On 05/22/2008 06:12:46 by winsome81

I was just sitting here thinking about all the music I've listened to over the years, what I grew up with and stuff. Here is some of what i can remember...

I grew up listening to records of Crystal Gayle (she was my fave), Willie Nelson, Anne Murray, Bruce Springsteen, Live Aid (We are the world), The Beatles, and my dad still has about a bazillion classical records he used to play; also tapes of Heart and Air Supply that my parents played on long trips in the van. My older brother soon got me listening to some classic rock and blues, stuff like Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Kansas, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Robert Johnson. And we used to sit for hours and watch MTV, when they still played music videos.

When I got to be about 12/13 I was listening to a lot of R&B and a little rap.... SWV, TLC, Aaliyah, Boyz II Men, Jodeci, Babyface; Sade, Natalie Cole, and some old school stuff like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding, the Dead Presidents soundtracks. I also listened to some Nate Dogg, Warren G, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Snow (kinda like ska-rap), LL Cool J ('member Mama Said Knock You Out?).

So as I got more into HS I started listening to grunge/hard/alt rock, stuff like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Korn, Offspring, Live, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Blur, Green Day, Soul Coughing, No Doubt, and a bunch of other stuff I can't think of. My parents hated it. lol I was also listening to stuff like early Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Jimi Hendrix, Phish, The Pretenders, Lenny Kravitz (the earlier the better), Seal, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Cardigans, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Enrique Iglesias, Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan, Tori Amos, Luscious Jackson, Sneaker Pimps, Collective Soul. I used to go the library and borrow as many CDs as they'd let me.

So now at this point in my life, I've gone through and checked out a lot of other music I missed, mostly due to not being born yet ~ and a lot of stuff that's come out in recent years... Death Cab, Postal Service, Arcade Fire... I'm leaving out a lot of stuff here for the sake of brevity.

I still don't feel like heard even a fraction of it all. And there's new great stuff coming out all the time. I like to visit music blogs and download songs from artists I've never heard of. Some I've found that I like are Great Lakes Myth Society, Joe Pug (really sounds like he's ripping off Bob Dylan's early sound, but his lyrics are good and I like the sound anyway), Rogue Wave (sorta popular Indie folk band). And I also like Pandora for finding new music.

I kinda feel like Johnny-Five from Short Circuit.... "Need input". I'll gobble up just about anything I can get my hands on. I'm addicted to it!

You sound like a musical connoisseur. lol And I think your right there is just so much music out there to listen to. But, I do think a lot of musical ideas are repeated by other artists (albeit inadvertently..at least most of the time lol) Do you like anything along the lines of progressive rock or death metal? I know there are some types of music that I just don't like even though they are very few. (reggae and some gospel lol)

Have you heard of Nina Nastasia? Look for a song called "Why don't you stay home". It's my current fave.

Also, Esthero is a continued favorite. I have one of her songs on my page. It's "Indigo Boy".

Liz Phair? I can recommend almost every song on her debut album Exile in Guyville.

Two words for you: Enrique Iglesias?
No wait, 4 words for you! Enrique Iglesias and Anne Murray? I had almost forgotten about her. That wouldn't have been a bad thing ;-)
My mom is a music dork. All I heard growing up was Gene Autry's Christmas Carols or something. Very limited music library she had. My brother though was into hard rock and sometimes sort of skate music so he saved my musical soul.
Maybe check out some foreign music. If you speak French at all - with your très bien, I thought that maybe. I have some samples on my page - good stuff! I think you would dig the "BB Brunes" given your musical heritage.
Word up!
